| The scales are hand cut in
a 1 mm thick vegetable tanned cowhide, they were first dyed then airbrushed
around the edges. I then stitched them to a 1 mm thick backing leather
strip. This was inserted in the main part of the strap, a 1.5 mm vegetable
tanned cowhide dyed dark brown and stitched right around with a braided
waxed thread as used by boot makers and saddlers. The cross is a plug
of thicker leather covered with snake skin ( I am not sure which kind
of snake it is ) I bought a box of mixed snake skins from an old man a
while ago now, he used to make exotic leather handbags in Austria when
those things were in high fashion. Could be Python but I'm really not
sure .
The strap was lined with a thick suede ( cowhide ) then the all lot
was laced with Kangaroo leather, the best thin leather in the world
for lacing due to its tight grain. The edge braiding is called a Spanish
edge lacing. The button holes are reinforced with Kangaroo leather underneath
and the buckle ( a solid brass buckle ) is also covered in Kangaroo
leather which I airbrushed 2 tones. |
